New Rules for Shipping E-Waste Effective January 1, 2025

11/03/2025

New rules on ‘e-waste’

Effective January 1, 2025, significant changes have been implemented concerning the transboundary shipments of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) within the European Union and beyond. These changes are in line with the recent amendments to the Basel Convention codes, as adopted by the EU.

Key Changes:

  • Intra-EU Shipments: Non-hazardous WEEE can continue to be shipped within the EU under the “Green List” procedures, specifically codes GC010 and GC020.
  • Exports to Non-OECD Countries: The export of WEEE destined for recovery from the EU to non-OECD countries is now prohibited
  • Imports and Exports of WEEE Classified as A1181 and Y49: Exports of WEEE classified under codes A1181 and Y49 to OECD countries, as well as imports into the EU, are now subject to prior written notification and consent procedures.

These regulatory updates aim to enhance the environmentally sound management of WEEE and align with international environmental agreements. Stakeholders involved in the shipment of WEEE are advised to familiarize themselves with these changes to ensure compliance!
