About Repair Café – Repairing for a Sustainable Future
Our Slovenian partner, ORZ, will participate to the Repair Café workshop – a grassroots, community-based event and global movement where people bring broken everyday items (from clothing and furniture to small appliances and electronics) to be fixed together with (volunteer) experts using shared tools and advice — often over a cup of coffee or tea!
It focuses on teaching repair skills, extending product lifespans, and building local connections, all to reduce waste and challenge throw-away culture. More than 2,500 Repair Cafés operate worldwide across dozens of countries.
In relation to WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) — the category of waste from discarded electrical and electronic devices that is rapidly growing and contains hazardous and valuable materials — Repair Cafés help by preventing many small devices from prematurely becoming WEEE. Repairing and reusing items like lamps, radios, or kitchen gadgets keeps them out of waste streams, conserves resources, and supports circular-economy goals.
In Slovenia, Repair Cafés are active in places like CPU Ljubljana and Slovenske Konjice, where monthly or project-linked workshops invite people to repair and refurbish items with volunteers. These events aim to reduce and reuse WEEE and other waste by promoting repair culture, knowledge exchange, and longer product lifespans. Such activities not only reduce the amount of electronics becoming waste but also raise awareness of sustainable consumption and circular economy practices locally.
