Electrão — one of two national e-waste management entities — has announced a record year for electrical waste recycling in Portugal, with more than 45,000 tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collected in 2025. This represents a 26% increase compared to 2024 and equals around 4.5 kilograms of e-waste collected per person.

The results were published in Electrão’s 2025 annual report, marking the organization’s 20th anniversary.
Battery collection also increased significantly, reaching 1,705 tonnes, up 25% from the previous year. Meanwhile, Electrão’s door-to-door collection service for large household appliances collected 613 tonnes, a 34% increase compared to 2024.
Large household appliances — such as washing machines and dryers — represented the largest share of collected equipment, totaling 22,909 tonnes, a 51% rise from the previous year. Small household appliances like vacuum cleaners and toasters accounted for 8,554 tonnes, while 8,129 tonnes of temperature-regulating equipment, including refrigerators and freezers, were also collected.
Electrão expanded its nationwide collection network to 15,522 collection points, nearly 2,000 more than in 2024, helping make recycling more accessible to citizens.
Beyond recycling, Electrão is also promoting reuse and repair. In 2025, 1,632 tonnes of equipment were identified as suitable for a second life through reuse initiatives.
Electrão encourages citizens to continue using official recycling channels to help Portugal meet its environmental targets and recover valuable materials from discarded electronics.
